Which O-ring compound suits acids and solvents?
FKM (Viton) is the general-purpose answer for acids, aromatic solvents and hydrocarbons, and it holds up at higher temperatures than nitrile. It is a poor choice for hot water, steam, ketones and amines - EPDM handles the first two, PTFE covers most of the rest. EPDM or FKM on a steam line?
EPDM. It is stable in steam and hot water where FKM degrades, which makes steam one of the few duties where the more expensive compound is the wrong one. Why does a high-pressure seal keep extruding into the clearance gap?
That is a back-up ring problem rather than a seal problem. Above roughly 100 bar - and sooner if the clearance gap is worn or the temperature is high - an elastomer creeps into the gap and shears. The correct back-up ring on the low-pressure side is the fix. Send the groove dimensions and the working pressure and the team will specify the ring alongside the seal.
